The idea of PAN Card was introduced by the Indian Government in 1972 and made constitutional under section 139A of the Income Tax Act of 1961. When PAN is allotted to an organization, a PAN Card is provided by the Income Tax Department. PAN Card is a 10-digit unique identification alphanumeric number (containing both alphabets and numbers) which is assigned to Indians, usually to those who pay tax. Under section 139A of the Income Tax Act, the following taxpaying entities are required to have a Permanent Account Number:

  • Any person who has paid tax or is liable to pay tax to the Income Tax Department. This will be decided based on the tax slabs. 
  • Any person who is carrying out a business or professional practice which earns him a yearly turnover of more than Rs. 5 lakh in any year of assessment.
  • Importers and exporters who are liable to pay any form of tax or duty charges as per the Income Tax Act or as per any prevalent law.

Procedure for PAN Card Correction on NSDL e-Gov portal

To make Correction in PAN Card, please follow the below mentioned steps:

  • Visit the NSDL e-Gov portal at https://www.protean-tinpan.com/.
  • Click on the ‘Services’ tab and select ‘PAN’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Now scroll down the page and locate the heading “Change/Correction in PAN Data”.
  • Click on ‘Apply’ from the list of options given.
  • You will now have to fill up this Online PAN Application such as Application Type, category, name, date of birth, email address, mobile number, etc.
  • Enter Captcha Code and click on the Submit button.
  • Your request will be noted, and the email address you have provided will receive a Token Number. By clicking the button that is provided below, you can proceed with the process.
  • After moving forward, you will be taken to the PAN card update form. Select “Submit scanned images through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov” from among the three alternatives available to upload your papers.
  • Now, enter the details like your father’s name, mother’s name, Aadhaar number and click on Next button.
  • On another page update your address.
  • Attach all the required documents like address proof, age proof, identity proof, and PAN.
  • Then accept the Declaration and click on the Submit button.
  • After that, you’ll be taken to the payment page. Demand drafts, credit/debit cards and online banking are available payment methods.
  • An acknowledgment slip will be generated upon successful payment.
  • The applicant must print it off and submit it, together with the hard copy documentation evidence, to the NSDL e-gov office. Additionally, place two photos in the designated area and write a sign across it.
  • On the top of the envelope, write Application for PAN Change and the acknowledgment number and send it to the NSDL Mailing Address i.e.,

Procedure for PAN Card Correction through UTIITSL Portal

To make PAN Card Correction through UTIITSL portal, please follow the below mentioned steps:

  • On homepage, under the PAN Card Services tab, click on the Apply PAN Card option.
  • Now, click on the Change/Correction in PAN Card option.
  • On another page click on Apply for Change/Correction in PAN Card details.
  • Select the mode of document submission.
  • Now enter your PAN, select the PAN card mode and click on the Submit button.
  • Re-enter your PAN number and click on OK button.
  • A reference number will be issued to you after the request has been registered.
  • Click on OK button.
  • Now, enter your name, address, etc and click on the Next Step button.
  • After that, enter PAN and verification and click on the Next Step button.
  • Now, upload all the required documents and click on the Submit button.
  • Generally PAN updates and corrections take 15 days.
  • You will receive a text message on your registered mobile number when your PAN card is dispatched via post.
