PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana:- To correct regional imbalances in the availability of affordable healthcare services, the Government of India created a new scheme known as PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana in the year 2006. Under this scheme, various medical facilities will be provided to the people of India. About PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana

A new scheme has been created by the government of India to provide various medical facilities among the residents of India at a very reasonable price. The name of this scheme is Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Under this scheme, the imbalances in the availability of affordable healthcare facilities in the different parts of the country will be improved by the government. The main aim of launching PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana is to augment facilities for quality medical education in the different parts of India. The scheme has been divided into two phases by the government.

  • In the first phase of PMSSY, the government will set up 6 institutions of AIIMS and will upgrade 13 existing government medical colleges.
  • In the second phase, two more AIIMS-like institutions will be set up by the government in the statess of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana Objective

As we all know there is an imbalance in the availability of affordable Health care facilities in the different parts of the country. And due to this situation, the people of the country are not able to take proper treatment in any part of the country. By keeping this in mind the Government of India has created a new scheme known as Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Under this scheme, the imbalance in the availability of affordable healthcare services will be corrected by the government of India. The main aim of launching this scheme is to provide the proper health facilities among the people of the country in any part of India.

  • With the help of PM Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, facilities for quality medical education in the underserved states of the country will be provided.
  • The main aim of launching PMSSY is to boost the facilities of quality education in India.

Better Medical Treatment For Cancer Patients

The central and state government are providing better facilities for cancer patients under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Around 90 cancer hospitals have been built in the Jhajjar district of Haryana. The main objective of building these hospitals is to enhance the capacity for the treatment of cancer patients in the country. All the generic medicines are also available at affordable prices under this scheme. The Chief Minister also congratulated the medical staff for doing a great job in providing the treatment to the patients. They also said that they are doing every possible thing to help people suffering from cancer

Components Of PMSSY

There are around two components of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana which are as follows.

First Components

Under the first component of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the government will set up 6 institutions Of AIIMS to provide better health facilities among the residents of India. These institutions will be set up in the state of Bihar, Patna, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, and Uttaranchal with a total budget of Rs. 840 crores per institution. The state has been selected on the basis of socio-economic indicators like human Development index, literacy rate, population and per capita income, and health indicators like the population to bed ratio, the prevalence rate of serious communicable disease, infant mortality rate, etc.

  • Each institution will contain 960 beds to provide healthcare facilities in specialty disciplines.
  • Other than this medical colleges will have 100 UG intake which is based on Medical Council of India norms.

Second Component

The up-gradation of 13 existing government medical colleges institutions will be done under the second component of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The government will upgrade this institution with an outlay of Rs. 120 crores. Out of which Rs. 100 crores will be given by the central government and Rs. 20 crores will be given by the State Government for each institution. These institutions are from several states of India. The list of 13 institutions under this scheme is as follows:-

  • Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Government Medical College, Salem, Tamil Nadu.
  • B.J Medical College, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • Bangalore Medical College, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi.
  • Grants Medical College and Sir JJ groups of the hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Implementation Of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana

The implementation of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana is divided into three phases which are as follows:-

First Phase

  • Under the first phase of this scheme, the major focus will be given up on the two components which are to set up six institutions like AIIMS and up-gradation of 13 existing government college institutions.
  • The government will set up 6 AIIMS institutions in various states like Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttaranchal.
  • The states will be chosen on the basis of socio-economic indicators and health indicators.
  • Each of these institutions will contain a 960-bed Hospital.
  • Out of which 500 beds for Medical College Hospital.
  • 300 beds are for a specialty super specialty.
  • 100 beds for ICU and 30 beds for physical medicine and rehabilitation and 30 beds for Ayush.
  • In addition to this 13 existing colleges all over India will be upgraded with an outline of Rs. 120 crores.

Second Phase

Under the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the government will set up two more AIMS-like institutions. These AIIMS will be built in the state of West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. In addition to this, the government will upgrade the six medical college institutions present in the state of Punjab Himachal Pradesh Tamilnadu Maharashtra Aligarh, and Rohtak. The cost which the government will use for building AIIMS institutions is around Rs. 823 crores. Out of which Rs. 125 crores will be contributed by the central government. Six medical institutions are as follows:-

  • Government Medical College, Amritsar, Punjab.
  • Government Medical College, Tanda, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Government Medical College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Government Medical College, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.
  • Pt BD Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science Rohtak.

Third Phase

The government will upgrade the medical college institution under the third phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The government will incur Rs. 150 crores as per institution. Out of which the central government will contribute Rs. 125 crore and the rest Rs. 25 crores will be incurred by the state government. The medical college Institutions are as follows:-

  • Government Medical College, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Government Medical College, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Government Medical College, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Government Medical College, Darbhanga, Bihar.
  • Government Medical College, Kozhikode, Kerala.
  • Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary, Karnataka.
  • Government Medical College, Muzaffarnagar, Bihar.
